If you are using the hawkinR package, you are will need to have access to your sites API integration key. Most of our users who have AMS integrations have already created one for those scenarios. But it most likely that you will create and use a different key for separate interactions and analysis in R. If you are not sure how to create a new API key or need a refresher, this article will walk you through all the steps.
We recommend you treat this token the same way you treat your username and password and store it somewhere safe. If you feel your local system and programming environment are safe, there are a couple of ways you can store your API integration key locally to save some steps when accessing your data via the hawkinR package.
To utilize any of the function’s of the hawkinR package, you will
first need to run the get_access() function to initialize
your session by getting a refresh token from the API. To do this
successfully, the function requires you to provide your unique
integration key (ie
get_access(refreshToken = 'enter_APIkey_here') ). While
this step is necessary to keeping your data secure, it can be an
annoyance to have to open a separate text file and copy-paste the key in
every time.
If you feel it is safe to do in your environment, there are ways to store your integration key locally. You can store your API token in RStudio by using environment variables or by creating a separate configuration file to store the token securely. Here are two common methods to do this:
Open your RStudio session.
In the R console, you can set an environment variable using the
Sys.setenv() function:
You can access this environment variable in your R scripts using
Sys.getenv("API_KEY").
To make this setting persistent across RStudio sessions, you can
add the Sys.setenv() line to your R profile or
.Renviron file. To edit your R profile or create a
.Renviron file, you can use the usethis
package:
Create a separate configuration file (e.g., a text file) to store
your API token securely. You should not store sensitive information in
plain text, but for educational purposes, you can create a file named
config.txt with the API key in it:
API_KEY=your_api_key_hereThen, you can read this configuration file in your R script and extract the API key as a variable:
Make sure to place the config.txt file in a secure
location and restrict access to it.
Remember that storing sensitive information like API keys in plain text files or environment variables can be a security risk. In production or more secure environments, consider using a dedicated secrets management tool or service to store and retrieve your API keys securely.
